The Captain speaks about his job change and explains the background. |::|THIS CARGO IS TOO HOT|::|Many loaded pallets are left waiting in the sun, and the hold must be cooled seperately, although the outside temperature is -4°F c at 26,000ft, the thermostat is measuring 61°F on the fuselage. Review ------ PilotsEYE.tv: Hong Kong - Written by Konstantin Koll | Created on August 4th 2013 - I was eager to get my hands on the latest PilotsEYE.tv DVD, LEJ-BGY-HKG-LEJ on an AeroLogic B777F, as I was on a FedEx CGN-MEM-CGN rotation myself in early 2012. It's time to finally give the boxhaulers some love! One cockpit Two pilots Six cameras Since almost seven years, PilotsEYE.tv creates high-quality documentaries directly out of the cockpit of airliners in HD quality using six cameras ed behind the cockpit windows and on the glareshield. To date, PilotsEYE.tv is well-known for accuracy and high quality productions. This DVD is the first PilotsEYE.tv documentary of a freighter run, a triangle flight from LEJ via BGY to HKG, then directly back to AeroLogic's base LEJ. Captain on this rotation is Joe Moser, LTU's former chief pilot who is featured in two episodes to the North Pole and the Maldives. The outbound flight to HKG via BGY leaves LEJ on June 17th, 2012. It's a wonderful day for flying, although a typhoon warning is issued for the final destination Hong Kong. You get some great footage of loading the Boeing 777F in LEJ. Flight S3 512 arrives BGY on time to load and onload some containers. BGY is definately a destination for low cost carriers, as lots of Ryanair birds indicate. Heck, don't they even call BGY Milan-Bergamo? After some hassle with the forward cargo door, the flight takes off from runway 10 and continues onward to HKG just on time to avoid a missed slot. Today's routing is GRZ, Romania, Russia, GYD, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakisthan, DEL, DAC, KMG and CAN, with 75 metric tonnes of freight. The DVD has some great landscape footage, although it's almost a redeye flight. Fortunately, the typhoon at HKG is a mere tropical depression with some rain, so the flight touches down safely in HKG. Hong Kong is one of my favorite places (although I've never managed to get there), so I really liked to see some places during the crew's layover: the famous trolleys, a visit to Victoria Peak, Kowloon and the "Symphony of Lights" show. It's also amazing to see the former Kai Tak airport as a big wasteland I really think the area should be recled and fully developed, as Hong Kong has a real estate shortage. The inbound flight 3S 519 to LEJ departs HKG runway 25L with a rolling takeoff. During the redeye flight, 2nd officer Wojciech Blenski explains many of the B777's controls, most of which you get as bonus footage on the DVD (along with some really great s of Hong Kong's former Kai Tak airport, commented by Cpt. Joe Moser). Another unique feature is some footage from a camera ed to the nose gear, especially on takeoff in HKG hopefully we get to see this more often in future episodes! Resume This is a really great DVD, giving you some in into the boxhauling business. In addition, I'm in love with Hong Kong, and very fond of the Kai Tak bonus footage. You should really go out and buy this episode, either for yourself or as a gift to the aviation enthusiast among your friends! --flight.net PilotsEYE is back for yet another thrilling journey. Quito airport has always been well respected by pilots as one of the most dangerous airports in the world. |-| Our first flight takes us from Frankfurt to Dakar. After viewing a few clips of the MD-11 being loaded, we are introduced to the Captain and First Officer who discuss various details about the long flight ahead. After all of the cockpit preparations have been made, the crew suddenly realizes that there is a fault with the Electrical Power Generator Systems (EPGS). Fortunately, the skilled technicians at Lufthansa were able to fix the problem with relative ease and this resulted in an on time departure to Dakar. While enroute to Dakar, the Captain discusses some very interesting facts about the MD-11 that will definitely capture your attention. For example, it was interesting to learn that the MD-11 is one of the only aircraft that can tilt backward if it is fueled before being loaded.|-| While enroute to Sao Paulo, the Captain follows up this discussion with a presentation on how the abnormal checklist is used in the event of an engine failure or fire. While on the topic abnormal conditions, viewers are also enlightened about the source of the aural warnings commonly heard in the MD-11 and other MD aircraft. It was nice to see the face behind the voice. -| During their walkaround inspection on the following day, it was noticed that there was evidence of a bird strike on one of the engine cowls which likely occurred during the takeoff from Dakar. Nonetheless, the damage didn t seem to be detrimental to the aircrafts operation and soon thereafter we departed to Manaus.|-| While enroute to Manaus, we get to know more about our Senior First Officer as she opens up about how she got into flying and what her career goals are for the future. In addition to learning more about the crew, we also learn more about the MD-11. |-| While at Manaus, the Captain takes us for a very exclusive walkaround of the aircraft, which includes the Center Accessory Compartment and much more. An interesting detail of the MD-11 that many may not be aware of is that McDonnell Douglas did not have a license to produce MD-11 Freighters. As an alternative, they produced the passenger version and thereafter blanked out the windows to convert the airframe into a cargo variant. This is why many MD-11Fs may have blanked passenger windows while having never flown passengers before. |-| Our trip from Manaus to Quito was by far one of the best highlights of this program. While enroute, the Captain discusses various features of Quito airport that make it a challenge for pilots and especially MD-11 pilots since the MD-11 itself had very unique performance and handling capabilities. After a beautiful approach and landing, the crew takes a day off to explore all that Quito has to offer. |-| To summarize this program, it was an epic documentary that is worthy of prime time TV. I was amazed at the meticulous manner in which this program was edited to include real time footage of the aircraft from numerous vantage points both inside and outside of the aircraft. As an added bonus, we were also able to footage of the air traffic controllers as they communicate with our aircraft. The stunning views from the cockpit also added to the overall quality of this program since it nicely showcased some of the most beauty flying moments I have seen to date. |-| While this program is not natively in the English language, there are subtitles in various languages so that all can benefit fully from the presentation. Some may see this as a burden, but quite honestly I had no problem keeping up with the comments made by each pilot. This program ranks number 1 on my list of all-time favorite MD-11/Cargo operations and for the price of Euro 29.90; I would highly recommend that you add this program to your collection. --VATSIM Marlon Carter
